This cozy and inviting eatery at 660 Central Ave Suite C is a beloved spot for locals and visitors alike who crave genuine, flavor-packed Vietnamese dishes served with warm hospitality.
Rang Dong’s menu is a delightful exploration of traditional favorites and hearty comfort foods. Signature dishes such as Bun Bi Thit Nuong Cha Gio and Bun Bo Hue Cay showcase a symphony of textures and bold spices, featuring tender vermicelli noodles complemented by savory pork and crispy egg rolls. The Bun Rieu, with its delicate crab broth, and fresh Goi Cuon (spring rolls) offer refreshing balances of flavor and freshness, perfect for those seeking lighter fare.
Food lovers will find joy in the popular Vermicelli with Pork and Egg Rolls and the aromatic Grilled Shrimp over Rice Noodles, dishes that marry tender grilled meats with fragrant herbs and crisp vegetables. Don’t miss the Banh Xeo — Vietnamese savory pancakes bursting with shrimp, pork, and bean sprouts — that deliver satisfying crunch with every bite. For those in the mood for a sandwich, the Bánh Mì Cha Lua Vietnamese Pork Ham with Pâté or the hearty combo sandwich loaded with jambon, bacon, and headcheese are crafted on expertly baked, crusty bread that earns high praise from patrons.
Other favorites include the Broken Rice with Grilled Pork, a dish that locals rave about for its generous portions and comforting flavors, and the warming Bo Kho beef stew — slow-cooked with fragrant spices like cinnamon, star anise, and lemongrass — that melts in your mouth and leaves a lasting impression. Rang Dong pairs perfectly with their classic Ca Phe Sua Da, providing that essential, cooling Vietnamese iced coffee experience.
Many diners appreciate not only the thoughtfully prepared food but also the welcoming atmosphere. From the moment you step in, the staff make you feel like an honored guest. As customer Cee Rose shares, “We felt very welcomed right away and well taken care of. We sat in the window and ate like time didn't exist. What a wonderful experience.” The restaurant’s intimate size fosters a sense of community without sacrificing comfort, making it a perfect spot for a casual meal that still feels special.
The attention to authentic flavors combined with generous serving sizes and reasonable prices have built a loyal following. Stephen McQuarrie’s review highlights the consistency that Rang Dong maintains over the years: “I came here for the PHO. As 3 and a half years ago it had the same great taste.” Likewise, Karleen Eberle notes the soulful quality of the pho broth that “instantly makes me feel more alive” alongside large portions that leave most guests satisfied and often bringing home leftovers.
Whether you’re craving a spicy bowl of Bun Bo Hue, a fresh and crispy Banh Xeo, or a classic grilled pork banh mi on perfect bread, Rang Dong Restaurant stands out as a gem in Alameda’s dining scene — a place where each bite carries the warmth and complexity of Vietnam’s culinary soul.
With easy parking and a friendly staff ready to guide you through the menu, Rang Dong offers an inviting escape to flavor-packed, authentic Vietnamese cuisine that keeps customers coming back time and again.
I almost gave up on Vietnamese food on the island. So many places with terrible food. Not fresh, not good quality. This little place is absolutely perfect. Good prices, good quality, good serving sizes and a very nice staff working here. We felt very welcomed right away and well taken care of. We sat in the window and ate like time didn't exist. What.a wonderful experience. And they have a parking lot :)
Haven't eaten at this venue for about 3 and a half years. I was happy to see it was still open. I came here for the PHO. As 3 and a half years ago it had the same great taste. Price increased but that was expected. I will continue to come here to this small venue everytime I come visit.
Rang Dong is an awesome spot if you're looking for affordable grub! One dish you absolutely have to try is their Bo Kho, it is incredibly yummy. This beef stew is packed with flavor, thanks to a slow-cooked broth loaded with spices like cinnamon, star anise, and lemongrass. It’s rich, savory, and just the right amount of spicy. The beef is super tender, practically melting in your mouth, and the broth is so fragrant it’ll have you hooked from the first bite. They serve it with either warm baguette slices or noodles ( had mine with noodles ), making it the perfect hearty meal. You can tell they use high-quality ingredients, and everything just tastes fresh and well-balanced. On top of the great food, the vibe at Rang Dong is cozy and welcoming, it is definitely a small mom and pop business, The staff is super friendly and attentive. Whether you’re there for a casual lunch or a laid-back dinner with friends, it’s the kind of place you’ll want to come back to. If you’re craving authentic Vietnamese, Rang Dong and their Bo Kho are totally worth checking out!
$10 for the grilled pork banh mi, incredible bread! Vegetables didn't taste very pickled. our server was so nice :)
This is one of my favorite places to get food in Alameda. Amazing pho, the broth is fantastic full of flavor and i instantly feel more alive. I get either the sliced rare beef or chicken noodle, both are delicious. Add a side of steamed veggies. Spring rolls and fresh rolls are yummy too. Huge portions, I leave full and usually with leftovers.
After attending Saturday Mass with a friend, we decided to join a couple of ladies that go to Rang Dong's often. It was only a block away from Central Avenue and Webster. The vegetables were fresh and the soup broth was great, however the chicken was over cooked. I was in love with the fresh vegetables. I would go again to try something different next time.
